Marathon and Double Marathon Course
Description
Start to Pine Hollow: The run begins in the open field
west of Ledges Shelter. You will run across the field turning left on the gravel
track to enter the trail behind the Overlook. Take the rocky trail down and
turn to the right at the top of the stairs. Follow the trail along the base of
Richie Ledges keeping them to your right. Turn left onto the trail to Octagon
parking lot and left at the kiosk. The smooth gravel trail will cross the
Octagon access road where you will climb a short set of stairs. Turn right at
the Pine Cone trail. Stay to the left at the intersection with the trail
leading to the Boy Scout Camp. Make a right turn down the stairs at the next
trail intersection. After a short climb, this trail descends to the Truxell Road
crossing. Enter Kendall
Lake parking and make the
immediate left onto Lake Trail. Turn left at the Lake
and Cross Country Trail intersection and climb a short, steep hill. Stay on the
Cross Country Trail keeping right upon reaching the Little Meadow Fork. You
will turn left AROUND the trail post and run two large, steep hills ending at
the Pine Hollow Aid Station. The first loop mileage at Pine Hollow is six (6)
miles. There are restrooms, crew access and drop bags at this station. However,
drop bags may not available the first time through Pine Hollow.
Pine Hollow to Covered Bridge: Leave Pine Hollow Aid Station to
the south on the grass next to the parking area. You will pass Crowfoot Gully
and turn right AROUND THE TREE at the south end of Little Meadow. After
crossing Quick Road,
take an immediate left onto the Wetmore Trail. Turn left at the Langes Run
Trail. Upon reaching Robinson Field, exit over the bridge and down the driveway
to the Akron-Peninsula Road
crossing. There will be an unmanned basic aid station at the road crossing.
Enter the Valley Bridle Trail on the west side of Akron-Peninsula Road. Follow the Valley
Bridle Trail along the Cuyahoga River to the Bolanz Road
Bridge over the river.
The Valley Trail turns behind the Hunt
Farm Visitors
Center. There are
restrooms at the Visitors
Center. You will turn
right onto Towpath Trail for about 100 meters and make a sharp left turn onto
Valley Trail at the north end of a small bridge. Valley Trail crosses Riverview Road and
the Cuyahoga Valley Line tracks ending at Covered Bridge Aid Station, Mile 13.
There is a restroom, crew access and a bag drop at Covered Bridge.
Perkins Riding Run Loop: Upon leaving the Aid Station,
cross Everett Road Covered Bridge.
Stay to the right of the guardrail following the trail next to Everett Road.
Runners will cross the road and begin the Riding Run Trail section of course
with a long climb. Riding Run Trail intersects with the feeder trail to Perkins
Trail with a sharp downhill right turn. Cross the road into Wayne Forest
and onto Perkins Trail. Return to Covered Bridge on Perkins Trail, turning
right at the guardrail after crossing the road. Cross Everett Road
Covered Bridge to access
the Aid Station at Mile 17.7.
Covered Bridge to Pine Hollow: Leave Covered Bridge
and run the course in the opposite direction back to Pine Hollow, Mile 24.7.
Pine Hollow to Ledges Shelter: Return to the Ledges Shelter by
going down the hill, straight past the trail post to the Lake Trail. Go right
on Lake Trail. After passing through the tunnel, turn left. Keep Kendall Lake on your left and follow the Lake Trail to Kendall
Lake Shelter. There is water and there are restrooms at the shelter. Depart the
shelter toward the parking lot with the lake to your left. You may receive aid
in the parking lot and be escorted to the finish at this point. Cross Truxell Road
and follow the trail back to Ledges Shelter. DO NOT REPEAT THE PINE CONE TRAIL.
Climb the stairs and follow the markings back to the Marathon
Start/Finish/Double Marathon turnaround at Mile 26.7. There will be full aid,
restrooms and crew access as well as drop bags at Ledges Shelter.
